Losing a tooth can be hurtful. But in situations where a tooth can no longer be saved, it is best to remove it to take care of the patient's dental health. And tooth extraction is one of the most common tooth removal procedures today.
Tooth extraction is a minor procedure in which the teeth are removed from the socket in the alveolar bone, a thick ridge of bone that contains the tooth sockets located on the jawbones.
There are many reasons why tooth extraction can be inevitable. These include the following:
If the teeth are crowded, healthy teeth are extracted to create space for straightening the rest of the teeth.
The teeth can be damaged in a number of ways. Usually, your dentist can repair the damaged teeth by root canal or using crowns. In some cases, your dentist will suggest an implantation method - extract the affected teeth and replace them with solid teeth that look like your original teeth.
Sometimes wisdom teeth can cause infection to the gum. Such teeth are removed through an extraction when other treatments fail.
Some baby teeth won't fall out on their own. The dentist will remove it promptly to allow permanent teeth to come in.
The tooth extraction procedure starts with a visual examination. For this, the dentist will take an X-Ray of your teeth in order to identify the exact position of your teeth and the condition of the bone. Then, the doctor will review your medical history to make sure you are fit for the extraction procedure.
There are two types of extraction procedures depending upon whether the tooth is visible or impacted - simple and surgical. A simple extraction includes administration of local anesthesia, whereas a surgical extraction may need both local and intravenous anesthetic. Your teeth and the surrounding area become numb, and you will feel only a little pressure during the procedure.
Next is tooth extraction. Your dentist will use an elevator to loosen the teeth and forceps to remove the socket's teeth. Different types of elevators and forceps are available. After the extraction procedure, apply gauze for 10 -20 minutes to control bleeding.
Like any dental or oral surgery procedure, tooth extraction is also susceptible to complications. So, it is always recommended to go for a good dental consult with an expert professional dentist before undergoing this procedure.
