What Are Permanent Dentures?

False teeth attached to the jaw are called permanent dentures. Permanent dentures are an alternate solution to removable dentures. They’re held in place using dental implants which makes them stable.

Permanent dentures look and feel exactly like your natural teeth. They do not fall out or get misplaced. They’re made of dental materials like acrylic, nylon, porcelain, resin, or metal.

Types of Permanent Dentures

Fixed-Removable Option

Most patients are comfortable with the fixed-removable option. They can easily remove their teeth at night to clean them and fix them back as easily.

  • Overdenture

In the overdenture option, some implants are placed in your jaw, and then traditional dentures are placed on it. It is made out of acrylic and denture teeth. Some also have a metal bar for support.

Pros:

It is simple to take out for cleaning purposes

Less expensive option

Fewer implants are placed when compared to other denture options

Cons:

Some patients may not like it since it can be removed

The acrylic may stain if abrasives are used on it for cleaning

It can also chip over time just like natural teeth

Maintenance is required twice per year

  • Deutsch Removable Bridge

This option is great for patients who like to take it out for cleaning. The Deutsch Removable Bridge option does not detach unless you want it to. Just like overdenture, this is also made out of acrylic with metal bars for support.

Pros:

Easily removable

Fewer implants are placed

Less maintenance

Easy to hide problems like severe bone and tissue loss

Cons:

Some patients may not like it due to its removable nature

Chips over time

The acrylic might stain if abrasives are used for cleaning

Expensive due to the lab bills

Fixed Implant Options

  • Hybrid Restoration

This is one of the most extensively used denture options. It has a metal that is wrapped with acrylic and denture teeth. This denture option does not come off during chewing or sneezing as it is fixed.

Pros:

  • Less costly than Zirconia permanent dentures

Cons:

Difficult to clean

Can chip over time

Acrylic may stain

Maintenance is mandatory every six months

  • Full Contour Zirconia

Zirconia is a white material and no metal is required in the restoration. It is very strong, and will not stain or chip like acrylics.

Pros:

Will not stain, chip, or break

Cons:

Difficult to clean

Expensive
