Dental Fillings Tooth decay, cracks, and minor fractures can all compromise the integrity of your teeth. When these situations happen, dental fillings help restore the tooth's function and appearance. While there are several types of materials available, porcelain fillings are a popular choice for patients seeking a durable and natural-looking solution. What is a Dental Filling?A dental filling is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay or minor trauma. Fillings restore the tooth's shape, strength, and function, and prevents further decay by sealing off any spaces where bacteria can enter. Traditional dental fillings are commonly made from materials like amalgam (a silver-colored metal blend), composite resin, gold, or porcelain. Each material has its own strengths, but patients increasingly favor tooth-colored options that blend in naturally with their teeth. How Are Porcelain Fillings Different?Porcelain fillings, also known as ceramic or inlay and onlay fillings, offer a more aesthetic and durable alternative to metal-based filling options. Unlike composite resin, which is applied directly into the cavity and cured in layers, porcelain fillings are crafted outside of the mouth, generally in a dental lab, before they are bonded to the affected tooth. Porcelain fillings are custom-designed to match your natural tooth color, providing a virtually invisible restoration. Porcelain is also a more stain-resistant material than composite resin, and does not expand or contract with temperature changes as metal fillings can. This stability helps reduce the risk of the tooth cracking or weakening over time. Porcelain Filling ProcedureGetting a porcelain filling typically involves two visits to our office. During the first appointment, the dentist will remove any decayed or damaged tooth material and take a digital or physical impression of the area. This impression is sent to a lab where the porcelain filling is created. A temporary filling may be placed in the meantime. Once the custom porcelain filling is ready, you will return for your second visit. The dentist will remove the temporary material and bond the new porcelain inlay or onlay securely to the tooth. It will then be polished to ensure a smooth and natural look and feel. Advantages and Disadvantages of Porcelain FillingsAdvantages
